Your Winter Storage Checklist
It’s finally starting to cool down, and it is time to put your lawn mower into storage. In order to ensure that your mower starts no problem come spring, it is vital to properly winterize your lawn mower. You can book your appointment now to have the experts at Ty’s properly winterize your lawn mower, but if you want to do it on your own at home, here is the checklist to make sure your mower gets through the winter!
- Clean the unit
- Change the oil
- Clean under the mower deck (this is especially important because the moisture in grass clippings can cause rusting in the mower deck when left for an extended period of time.)
- Change air filter
- Change fuel filter
- Check throttles and choke cables
- Sharpen or replace your blades
- Check idler pulleys
- Check spindle housings for corrosion
- Check hydro fluid and change if necessary
- Check battery and battery cables
- Check wheel bearings
- Check ignition and spark plugs
- Check dampeners on drive sticks
- Check belts
- Check PTO pulleys
- Check gauge wheels and bolts
- Check deck level
- Grease the unit
As far as gas storage you have a couple of options. You can either drain the gas out of your lawn mower by running it until it runs out of gas, or you can go out and start your mower ever month or so and let it run for around 20 minutes. You want to avoid letting the gasoline breakdown in the engine. If you leave your mower with gas in the tank you may find that it is unable to start come spring time.
